About the Teen Chef Program

People’s Pop Up Pantry, in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation, has created a fantastic teen cooking program called Teen Chef.

It was created by our Director, Monica Jones-Borges and the Garfield Community Center Recreation manager, Jean Lee. Jean has been working with teens for 30 years so when the teens approached her with a request to learn how to cook, she set out to make it happen. She started by heading across the street to Coyote Central where the People’s Pop up Pantry was hosted. She spoke with our Director and together they launched an idea to bring in neighborhood chefs to teach the teens. Within 3 weeks of that first meeting, they launched a 12 week program for teens to learn how to cook complete meals for themselves and their families.

The Teen Chef Program was such a success that People’s Pop Up Pantry and Seattle Parks and Recreation are launching it again Oct, 5 at Jefferson Community Center.
People’s Pop Up Pantry supplies the food and the chefs while Jean Lee, Seattle Parks and Recreation supplies teens who are eager to learn to cook.

Program Mission

The Teen Chef Program is committed to empowering teenagers through culinary education and fostering a lifelong passion for cooking and healthy eating. Our mission is to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment where young individuals can explore their creativity, develop culinary skills, and gain a deeper understanding of nutrition and food preparation. By offering hands-on training, mentorship, and educational resources, we aim to equip teenagers with the confidence and knowledge necessary to make informed food choices, cultivate their culinary talents, and inspire positive change in their communities. Through The Teen Chef Program, we strive to shape future leaders who will embrace cooking as a tool for personal growth, cultural appreciation, and social connection.
